below about Sean Penn’s latest film Milk, and be sure to check it out now in theaters everywhere!

After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city’s mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White’s attempt to rescind his resignation from the board.

Mr. Milk had been the subject of several books and the Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984); but Milk (2008) is the first fictional feature to explore private aspects of the man’s personal life and career.

  1. The movie is about a gay guy and it stars a communist traitor. Of course the media will love it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a good movie or not.

  3. A movie of a openly gay politician, haven’t we learned from this year alone, that a ‘political scandel’ is only entertaining if you get caught in the act, or if the FBI, or eBay find out the scoop first-hand?

  8. I looooooved the movie! Sean Penn did a phenomenal job! The film was tactfully and tastefully done. It was not overtly sexualized and it did not make an exaggerated attempt to “skittle coat” the community as free loving, barely clad hippe sexual deviants. I appreciated that it lightly touched a critical critique of lesbian’s contribution to the struggle where there still is a faint crassness felt between homosexual men and lesbian women. There still appears to be a unified division in the community. This is seen when Alison Pill’s character played by Anne Kronenberg subtly sheds light with her comments about joining Milk’s team while having some of Milk’s male supporters fret and fidget briefly by having Anne “join the team”. Gus Van Zant did a fantastic job as director of the film. I was moved. I was touched. I felt empowered leaving the film believing that age should not cripple anyone to move.

More films like these need to be made. It has so much heart, depth and character portraying the life of someone that lived and died for the rights that should be owed to all. May we all find a voice and a “soapbox” and never lose hope. “There is hope for a better world. There is hope for a better tomorrow…I know that you can not live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living” – Harvey Milk
