Eager to add yet another child to the stable, Madonna has descended upon Lilongwe, Malawi to finalize acquisition of a 3-year-old girl named Mercy James. It’s been reported the judge has delated ruling on Madonna’s application until Friday, apparently due to a bickering Grandmother.
Mercy James’ grandmother, 61-year-old Lucy Chekechiwa, is reportedly against Madonna’s decision to adopt. (Mercy James’ single teen mother died at age 18; the girl’s father is believed to be alive.) “Why doesn’t this singer pick other children?” she told Britain’s The Sun. “It is stealing. I want to go to to court. I won’t let her go.” It is unknown if Chekechiwa was at court Monday.
The singer — who adopted David Banda, 3, from the southern African country last year — returned to the nation’s capital, Lilongwe, for a scheduled appearance before a High Court judge on Monday that, if all goes as planned, should allow her to have Mercy that morning.
“Madonna will appear before a judge … to petition the court to certify her adoption,” a source at the High Court told UsMagazine. “Madonna will definitely be granted a temporary court order to allow her to take the child away with her.”
Looks like ol’ Vadge will have to spend another week in Malawi in hopes of returning with her new trophy.
