Definitely the most publicized bit of news on this day back in 1980, and a tragic one at that–John Lennon of the Beatles was shot and killed by a psychotic, super-stalking fan named Mark David Chapman, who fired four shots from a .38 caliber handgun outside Lennon’s Manhattan apartment building, critically wounding the rocker in a cowardly ambush.
As he bled to death being rushed to the hospital, John Lennon’s spirit moved on as he drew a final breath, having been declared dead upon arrival. The crazed fan, David Chapman, had earlier in the day coaxed an autograph from Lennon, and didn’t fight authorities while he remained at the crime scene for eventual arrest.
After the court case concluded, the Judge sentenced 25-year-old Mark David Chapman to 20 years plus behind bars at New York’s Attica Prison. He came up for parole in the year 2000, however, officials denied the request, citing remarks to Chapman that [your] “vicious and violent act was apparently fueled by your need to be acknowledged.”
Lennon remains in memoriam inside New York’s Central Park–a site personally landscaped by Yoko Ono as a tribute to her husband, rightfully dubbed “Strawberry Fields.” The section of Beatle’s (and Lennon) love is situated across the street from his old apartment building, the Dakota.
